What is calorie?

What is calorie?

Calorie is the chemical energy produced and stored in our body when we eat and metabolizamos a food. This is the energy needed for our daily activities such as digestion, respiration, circulation of exercises, functioning of the brain, heart, growth of hair and nails, etc.

All food has calories, but in different quantities. Greasy foods (e.g., fatty meat and dairy products) are the ones most contain calories. Since the carbohydrates, are those who have the calories more easily absorbed and metabolized, and renewable energy very good.

The main food energy are:

Fats, whose metabolism of 1 gram releases 9 calories.
Carbohydrates and proteins, whose metabolism of 1 gram releases 4 calories.
Alcohol, whose metabolism of 1 gram releases 7 calories.

The proteins are not always used for the production of calories. During the processes of growth and formation of new organic tissues, proteins are used with structural functions and your metabolism, instead of releasing, just consuming calories.

One of the main characteristics of food energy is that its excess cannot be eliminated by the body (contrary to what happens with the vitamins, minerals, fiber and trace elements - micorminerais such as iron and zinc). All the excess ingested, not used in the metabolic functions, it ends up being stored as fat, causing obesity.
